Jobs in Italy: Seasonal Work and Permit Conversion

There are different kinds of jobs in Italy, for instance, seasonal work. It allows EU and non-EU citizens to transit through Italy, thanks to the signing of special employment contracts regulated by Italian collective agreements. A foreign citizen can obtain a seasonal subordinate job in Italy when he receives a subordinate job offer. Only after the offer will the worker be able to convert his residence permit into one for subordinate work. The Italian authorities issue this type of permit/conversion respecting the quota established by the Decreto Flussi law. More about seasonal subordinate jobs in Italy

Seasonal works are those lasting for a period included from twenty days to nine months. It’s easy to understand how the peculiarity of the seasonal employment contract lies in the concept of temporariness. Seasonal work in Italy is regulated and contracted out only in the agricultural sector and the hotel tourism sector. Indeed, work activities related to these sectors only take place in a certain period of the year and are characterized by a lack of continuity.

Advantages of seasonal work in Italy

Seasonal work is allowed and regulated by the Italian State in two sectors that require manpower only in certain periods of the year. Why does a foreign citizen choose to enter Italy for a seasonal residence permit? 1. First of all, in Italy, agriculture and tourism require a lot of manpower, and fewer and fewer Italians are willing to work in these sectors. 2. Secondly, there is the chance to convert the “seasonal” residence permit into a permit for subordinate work, in compliance with the law Decreto Flussi. 3. Finally, the worker and his family have the right to register with the National Health Service by presenting a residence permit.

The documentation to obtain the conversion

The foreign worker who requests the conversion of his residence permit must go to the Sportello Unico Immigrazione to check the availability of the entrance quotas. This passage takes place by filling in the VB model which can be downloaded from the Ministry of the Interior’s website. You need to attach: • two revenue stamps worth 16 euros (one on the application and the other on the Nulla Osta); • copy of the valid residence permit for seasonal work; • copy of the non-seasonal employment contract; • copy of the employer’s identity document; • copy of the applicant’s valid passport; • mandatory recruitment communication relating to the first entry - Unilav recruitment form.

 The conversion procedure

Once the required documentation has been collected, the Sportello Unico Immigrazione sets an appointment for the signing of the residence contract. Subsequently, the institution issues the application form for the residence permit for subordinate work to be sent to the relevant Police Headquarters via the postal kit. Finally, the Police headquarters issue the residence permit for subordinate work after completing the procedure necessary for its release. The whole procedure is completed directly in Italy. In doing so, the foreign citizen who entered Italy for seasonal subordinate work is not obliged to return to his country of origin to apply for a visa for subordinate work.
